Wolf's LED Lighting is the Ideal replacement for Discontinued Fluorescent Lighting
The scheduled ban on the production of fluorescent lighting as outlined in the 2019 EU Ecodesign Directive and the RoHS Directives published in February 2022 is continuing at pace. Wolf Safety's extensive range of LED Installed Hazardous Area Lighting offers safe, effective and easy to install replacements
The scheduled phase out of fluorescent lighting as outlined in the 2019 EU Ecodesign Directive and the RoHS Directives published in February 2022 is continuing at pace.
Later this month, a production ban on both non-integrated Compact Fluorescent (CFL-ni) and Long-life Linear fluorescents (LFL) lamps will take effect, with the full schedule for the ban on production below:
- CFL – ni (non-integrated compact fluorescents): February 24th
- Long-life LFLs (linear fluorescent lamps): February 24th
- Long-life CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps): August 25th
- T5 (Tubular 5/8ths inch diameter): August 25th
- T8 (Tubular 9/8ths inch diameter): August 25th
Already phased out since September 2021 were CFL-i (Compact Fluorescent with an integrated ballast), T2 (Tubular, 2/8ths inch diameter) and T12 (Tubular, 12/8ths inch diameter)
The ban, initiated by the European Union, on the production of fluorescent lighting is designed to encourage the use of more energy efficient LED light sources and to restrict of the use of mercury in lamps.
Despite leaving the European Union, the United Kingdom is continuing to follow the EU RoHS Directive and will implement the ban, as will some 50 other countries outside the European Economic Area who are also adopting the regulations.
The cease in production clearly has serious implications: buying replacement fluorescent lighting for existing sites and specifying it for new builds will become increasingly difficult and ultimately impossible as existing stocks are exhausted.
However, there is some good news! For fluorescent lighting users in industries working in potentially explosive atmospheres, Wolf Safety’s range of ATEX LED Installed Lighting allows a quick and easy retrofit of existing fluorescent installations.
Says Miles Jackson, Wolf’s Sales and Marketing Director,
“Wolf’s ATEX LED linear lamps come in standard industry luminaire lengths and use standard fixings, so updating existing fluorescent lighting to modern LED models is quick and easy. And the cost of replacing older fittings with Wolf’s new highly energy efficient LED range will allow you to very quickly recuperate the upgrade cost and to very soon start saving money as LEDs can use up to 80% less power!”
He added, “And what’s more, Wolf is in the unique position of being able to offer ATEX certified lighting that replicates the light emitted from fluorescent lighting to those users who prefer it. Our unique and patented innovative Directional Linear Optics (DLO) is low glare and ideal for areas where lights are mounted at a lower level (and in the eyeline) and where operators are present for longer periods. We’re the only manufacturer that can offer this technology for Hazardous Areas”
In addition to saving on energy consumption, LEDs have a longer life expectancy – up to 15 times longer than fluorescent tubes (with the LEDs used in Wolf’s hazardous area fixed lighting range typically lasting 100,000+ hours), and subsequently cost less to maintain. They’re better for the environment too – LED lamps don’t contain mercury, which is both harmful to the skin and can contaminate the environment.
